Traveling by car has many advantages. Cars define the very idea of freedom; they allow you to go where you want and when you want. They take us places where we couldn’t otherwise travel – they bring us to our destinations faster, and we don’t need to abide by a schedule or rely on anybody else to become mobile.

However, for every pro, there’s a downside of traveling by car to match. There you have it: all of the advantages and disadvantages of traveling by car.

You can choose and change your route and there is no problem if you want to visit some places on the way. You don’t have to follow someone’s schedule: traveling with family or friends, it is easy to find a compromise.

If you have decided it’s best to bring your pet along, there is no problem. Most airlines will let you take a little companion in the cabin, but it is expensive and usually pretty stressful.

Opportunities

Travel is full of incredible opportunities. Everywhere you go there is something new to see and do. If you pick a car as your transport, you will be able to see many beautiful villages and small towns that you would have missed out without the car. You will have the possibility to eat in remote restaurants and cafes that unreachable to most tourists.

The car may be stolen or thieves may break in and steal what’s inside. There are a number of things you can do to reduce the risk of your car being stolen: never leave a car with open doors and windows and don’t forget to take the keys with you. Never leave valuables in plain view in an unattended car, park your car in well-lit areas.

Long Distances

Driving sometimes takes a long time. Long hours behind the wheel can take their toll. Make sure to take a break (of at least 15 minutes) every two hours.

Travelling by Car

There is nothing better than travelling by a fast car. Travel by car is a more personal experience, for there you can drive yourself.

You just sit down at the steering wheel, start the motor, step on the accelerator with your foot and off goes the car. You can go as slowly or as fast as you wish, stop when and where you choose; you park the car on the side of the road, get out and go wherever you like.

But what can be better than a spin in a car on a week-end with your friends? As soon as you get out of the crowded town and see a long wide road in full view, what a thrill it is to feel the car rush forward at a touch of your foot, to feel the wind in your face, to see houses, trees find people flash past, to feel the real joy of speed.

Then, of course, you see much more of the country than you do in a plane.

Suppose you are on vacation and have decided to take a trip in a car. What magnificent views you behold on your way — green fields, a road winding its way up the mountain with steep, grey cliffs on one side and a deep precipice on the other, a shining expanse of the sea wrapped in a blue noonday haze, the woods, the rows of acacia that stretch along the streets of the towns you pass through. Indeed your impressions are unforgettable.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Travelling by Car

It’s true: I love a good road trip. In fact, one of my favorite ways to travel is by car. We’ve traveled by car from Boston to Nova Scotia, extensively throughout New England, and even rented a car in the Bahamas—and braved driving on the “other” side! Over the years, I’ve learned there are clear advantages and disadvantages of travelling by car.

You’ll want to consider both sides before planning your road trip. Read on to learn the pros and cons of car travel.

Advantages of Travelling by Car

First of all, if you want to find the best deals on car rentals in your area.

I highly recommend Discover Cars. This online car rental agency will automatically compare car rental rates from a variety of different companies.

This way, you can efficiently choose the best price for your next road trip. Especially since, unlike many other websites, they will never hide additional fees and extra costs from you.

Because when you take a trip by car, you have unlimited flexibility and independence. Car trips provide most travel freedom, especially when it comes to your itinerary.

1. You Can Pack All Your Stuff in the Car

You can basically live out of your car, if you want to. And you don’t have to pay any baggage fees or lug heavy suitcases in and out of airports.

Plus, if you pick up souvenirs as you travel by car, you can get them home easily. You won’t have to worry about fitting them into your suitcase or shipping them, especially if they are valuable.

And to help keep things a little more organized, try using this Drive Auto Products Car Cargo Trunk Organizer. Not only is it incredibly affordable, but it features a fantastic tie-down strap system that fastens the organizer to your car. That way, items don’t haphazardly move around your trunk.

It’s also made of durable Oxford fabric available in black, gray, and tan colors. This trunk organizer has sturdy sides with 13 stiff base plates that maintain its overall shape.

There are also various expandable, smaller pockets that allow you to keep things neat and tidy while you’re on the road.

2. You are On Your Own Schedule

The beauty of taking a vacation by car is you can start the trip when you want. Stay when, where, and as long as you want. And, you can leave whenever you want.

That way, you are completely on your own schedule.

3. You Don’t Have to Get Dressed Up to Go

A friend from a different generation talked about wearing what she called “a smart travel outfit” for transcontinental flights.

Times may have changed, but it’s still a whole lot easier to throw on comfy travel clothes for a car trip. Then, you can hit the road without preparing to get dressed for a public trip.

Made with supremely soft material, you’ll enjoy a flattering but relaxed fit that will be ideal for your next road trip.

Just pair them with this loose fitting, GADEWAKE long sleeve round neck pocket t-shirt and you’ll quickly have an ideal outfit for your next road trip.

4. You’ll See more Scenic Beauty When you Travel by Car

Sure, it’s faster to travel by plane.

But think of the views you’d take in on a great American cross-country trip! Or even consider the scenes you’ll enjoy on a weekend road trip north.

You’ll truly experience the natural beauty and character of the places you pass through by car. You’d miss all that scenery from a cruising altitude of 35,000 feet.

5. You Can Go Off Course If You Want To

If you see something you want to explore that’s off the beaten path or even just off your original plan, go ahead!

It might be an opportunity for you might experience something wonderful and unexpected. The beauty of traveling by car is it does not tie you to a firm itinerary.

The only limits are those you place on yourself.

6. You Can Snack as You Go and Enjoy Meals Out, Too

When you travel by car, you can pack a bunch of good snacks and lunches in a cooler for the ride. And when you come across a great place with a view, you can have a picnic.

While you’re on the road, you can also stop to check out a cute coffee shop or enjoy a nice dinner out. This way, you can truly get a real “taste” of a destination by seeking interesting places to eat.

You should always check online reviews before you commit. My advice is to ask a local for their dining suggestion, if you want to find the best places to eat.

And if you want to avoid the high prices you’ll find at most convenience stores, then you can always purchase a BiteBox Care Package prior to the start of your trip. It’s reasonably priced, can be delivered right to your home.

In fact, it’s brimming over with sixty different name brand snacks like Cheez-its, Pirate’s Booty, Mini Cookies, Chex Mix, Goldfish, Animal Crackers, and more.

So stock up before you go!

7. You Can Take Your Time and “Slow Travel”

As much as I love destination tours, sometimes there is so much on the itinerary that you feel rushed.

When you travel by car, there is no need to rush from place to place. It’s a perfect opportunity for slow travel. That way, you can catch the scenery and relax.

As the famous travel quote goes, “it’s about the journey, not the destination.”

They cover two times the distance,. include 360° directional awareness, and feature hands-free Wi-Fi capabilities. In addition, Escort Radar Detectors offer GPS-based auto learn technology. They also have IVT false alert filtering and include blind spot warning.

Heck, they even provide essential information on traffic flow monitoring.

These essential features are all packed inside one tiny, easy-to-use, highly portable device. This allows you to rest easy and drive safely during any future road trips you take.

8. You can Listen to a Fun Mix List, Podcast, Book on Tape, or Talk Radio.

Drive time is a great opportunity to catch up on the things you might not otherwise make time for.

And it replaces that awkward silence that unavoidably happens several hours into a drive. Introducing music or audios can lead to some interesting discussion points, too!

That’s why one of the first things I do before any road trip is download some fantastic audiobooks from AudioBooksNow. Because no matter what type of reader you are, they definitely have the perfect plan for you!

Just choose from among the millions of books that they have on their platform. You will never again have a dull moment on any car trip you take.

9. You’ll Bond With One Another

Depending on who you’re traveling with, a road trip has the advantage of being a great bonding experience.

I especially remember having important conversations with my teenage kids while en route to destinations. Think about it: When was the last time you spent several undivided hours with someone you love?

This could be your spouse, your bestie, your Mom, or your kids.

Both they and you will have each other’s undivided attention on the road together.

10. You Can Safely Control the Germs In and Out of the Car

If you’re concerned about germs (and we all are, more so now than ever), when you’re travelling by car, you have a semi-protected environment.

You control who goes in and out of your car.

This minimizes your exposure to a lot of different people who you might encounter on a plane or public transportation. Stock up on masks (preferably a cute but effective one, like this mask), hand sanitizer, and disinfecting wipes.

Then, when you make stops along the way, you’re further protected from unwanted germs.

11. You Easily Can Go as Far Off Grid as You’d Like

Remember I mentioned living in your car, above? I was only half kidding.

If you wanted to go totally off grid, you can pack an easy pop-up tent and turn your vacation into a tent camping trip. This keeps the expenses down and takes you further off the grid.

Disadvantages of Travelling By Car

As much as I love travelling by car, I promised to share the advantages and disadvantages of travelling by car.

So I will truthfully share the negative.

But I will do better than that by offering solutions that may help you overcome—or at least minimize—the disadvantages.

1. It Can Be Long, Boring, and Exhausting Driving for Hours

After driving hundreds of miles on the interstate, your enthusiasm can start to wane. The scenery can all begin to look the same.

2. The Car Can Get Messy and Stale, and You’ll Feel a Little Claustrophobic and Uncomfortable

It’s almost unavoidable that spending so much time in close quarters is going to get a little “ripe.” Plus, the trash and wrappers begin to accumulate, and you might feel confined.

Related Article: Consider these alternative ways to travel without flying.

3. You Have to Pay for All That Gas—And the Exhaust is Really Not Good for the Environment

Believe it or not, with great flight deals available today, it may be cheaper at times to fly than it is to drive. And you’re spewing out carbon exhaust while you drive.

4. You’ll Put Wear and Tear on Your Car

Yes, for every mile you drive, you are adding wear and tear (and depreciation) to your car.

That’s why, if you use your car for your next long-distance road trip, you may want to invest in quality auto parts from Eckler’s Automotive. They stock a wide array of top-quality automobile essentials for almost every type of vehicle on the road today.

Alternatively, there’s only one way around putting additional wear and tear on your car, other than not going.

Solution

5. You Could Run into Car Problems or Have a Car Accident

Sometimes the unexpected happens.

As the old saying goes, “expect the best but be prepared for the worst.” I believe that’s sage advice.

6. You Could Get Lost

Even with today’s mobile GPS and google maps, it’s possible to go off track. That’s especially true if you’re crossing through regions that don’t have Wi-Fi.

If you have a good sense of direction, it can be fun to get a little lost.

When you don’t, it can be unnerving.

7. Your Car Could Get Broken Into or Worse, Stolen

Just as it’s an advantage to have all your stuff in one place when you’re traveling by car, if the car is stolen, your valuables and all your stuff is gone. And now you’re stranded. Ugh!

9. You Could Hit Bad Weather or Traffic

It’s a bummer when you hit bad weather or traffic on a road trip. These two external factors are definite disadvantages outside of your control.

In fact, you kinda have to expect that you’re going to run into one or the other at some point during your travels.

Keep in mind that many of these disadvantages are small in comparison to the advantages above.

Even so, you’ll find some suggestions to help minimize the disadvantages of travelling by car.

Final Thoughts on the Advantages and Disadvantages of Travelling by Car

So, as you can see, there are quite a few advantages and disadvantages to travelling by car. And you have alternatives. But given the choice of plane, train, or automobile, car travel ranks high on the list for me, especially now.

If you decide you are tired of traveling by car or you put a lot of miles on your car, you might decide to get rid of it all together.

One easy route you can take is to work with a company to sell your car. Various companies like CarMax, and others will purchase your car from you no matter the condition. They make it a lot easier than dealing with classified ads and private sales.

And, you could pocket the money for your next trip!

I hope you find value in this post about the advantages and disadvantages of travelling by car!

The first time I had my own travel car was in New Zealand, back in 2014.

The ‘Danny-mobile’, as it became lovingly known, was falling apart at the seams. The front seats wiggled. The electric windows jammed open. The inner door was falling off.

Honestly, it was on its last legs from the very start.

But I loved it! That car ferried me around the entire country and provided me with some unforgettable experiences.

…right up until it broke down catastrophically up a tiny dirt road on south island.

Travel by car in The Danny Mobile was truly epic. Clearly, though, it wasn’t without its downsides.

Interestingly, the same has held true on all of my adventures with cars since. There are always pros and cons of car travel when you’re on the road.

Are you thinking of getting a car for your next adventure? This post may be of interest!

There are a bunch of pros and cons of cars while travelling. The open road is epic, but there are negatives to consider as well. Let’s start with the good stuff.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Travelling by Car:

Top Pros & Cons of Cars While Travelling

Here we go then: all the key pros and cons of having a car on the road.

Top Advantages of Travelling By Car

I thought I’d start with the pros of cars. These advantages of travelling by car are what make the experience so awesome.

1. Advantages of Car Transport #1: It’s One Long Road Trip!

One of the things I love most about car travel is the fact you’re on one giant road trip.

There’s something cool about it, right?

“ The windows are down, the music’s playing, and the good times roll. Whether you’re with friends or by yourself, going by car just feels good. ”

I can’t hear the words ‘road trip’, without getting all excited. Hitting the road like screams freedom, adventure, and possibility. It’s good vibes and awesome memories.

You know in your bones it’s going to be a special experience.

2. Driving is Fun

If you don’t love driving, then travelling by car is obviously not going to be right for you!

But if, like me, you enjoy being behind the wheel, then it makes for a great experience.

Sometimes it’s as simple as that! When the sun’s out, the sky’s blue, and the road’s clear, it’s hard to beat driving in a new country.

Travelling by car advantages and disadvantages. Смотреть фото Travelling by car advantages and disadvantages. Смотреть картинку Travelling by car advantages and disadvantages. Картинка про Travelling by car advantages and disadvantages. Фото Travelling by car advantages and disadvantages

Convenience is definitely one of the main advantages of road travel.

3. Convenience (One of the Main Advantages of Road Travel)

Travelling by car is undeniably convenient too.

I’ve explored countries in all sort of ways now. I’ve hitch-hiked, walked, cycled, and used a lot of public transport. And none of these other forms of transport are, in general, as convenient as going by car.

“ There’s no waiting around. You just get in the car and go. Likewise, there’s no real effort required. You just put your foot down and a few hours later you’re at your destination! ”

Travelling isn’t always easy. In fact, there are a bunch of disadvantages to it. Going by car is a great way of simplifying the process.

4. It Opens Up Opportunities

Travel is full of incredible opportunities.

Everywhere you go there is something new to see and do.

But, unfortunately, that incredible thing is often tucked far away down a long dirt road. Or, it’s 20km out of town. Or, it’s just too far away to make in unfeasible.

There’s nothing more frustrating than not being able to access something you know will be awesome. Nine times out of ten, having a car solves this problem.

Indeed, many insane experiences are directly tied to having a car.

In New Zealand, for instance, driving on the endless sands of 90 Mile Beach (one of the best things to do on North Island) was one of my most memorable experiences.

I would have missed out without the car.

5. See More Faster

If time is short, having a vehicle is great.

I went back to New Zealand this year and my dad came out to see me. We borrowed a car from a family friend and spent 2 and a half weeks exploring both islands.

We hit the ground running and squeezed in as much as we could.

“ Without a car it simply wouldn’t have been possible. We would only have seen and down a fraction of what we managed. ”

Of course, cars speed things up- it’s one of the major pros of cars when you’re in a hurry! I’m all for taking my time on the road. Often, it’s the process of getting from A to B where the magic happens.

However, sometimes you just need to get to your destination. Having a car facilitates that.

On the subject of getting places quickly, here’s more about the pros and cons of traveling by plane!

There are many advantages and disadvantages of cars as a means of transport. Hopefully though, these advantages to traveling by car are convincing you how worthwhile it is!

6. Saves Carrying Heavy Bags

Carrying a heavy bag sucks.

Especially over long distances.

Lugging your backpack or suitcase around is rarely pleasant. It may be part of the fun. And it’s definitely part of the backpacking experience. But when you’re going a long way with a hefty pack, it isn’t fun.

That isn’t a problem in a car. You just whack everything into the boot and you’re good to go.

7. Gear-Related Benefits of Travelling By Car: You Can Take More Stuff!

I’m always an advocate of taking as little stuff as possible when travelling.

However, there are definitely times when having a little extra comes in handy.

“ Lugging heavy backpacks isn’t fun. But there’s also a physical limitation to how much you can carry (both in terms of the weight on your back, and the capacity of your pack!). ”

Car traveling gives you masses more room to play with. Cooking stoves, cool boxes, oversized sleeping bags, tents, food, more clothes and shoes…It’s amazing how easy it is to fill up a car with stuff!

8. One of the Contentious Advantages of Car Travel: You Can Pick Up Hitch Hikers!

This won’t be for everyone.

But if you’re a fan of hitch hiking, then you should always pay it forwards!

Picking up hitch hikers is just a lovely thing to do.

You meet awesome people and do a good deed at the same time. You never know who you might meet (which is the exact problem for some people!). The vast majority will have interesting stories to tell. They can be awesome company for long and lonely car journeys

Nicely, you get some karma points too. The next time you hitch you’re sure to get a ride straight away…

Aside from the joy of road trips, the cost-effectiveness of buying your own vehicle is another of the main benefits of travelling by car.

9. It’s Relatively Inexpensive (Sometimes)

This won’t always be the case.

But, hiring or buying a car can turn into a cheap means of travel.

For example, many places are only accessible by vehicle. That means the epic tourist destination you absolutely have to see, has to be reached by road.

“ As such, tourist companies often set up bus journeys that charge masses to get you there and back. Hiring a car between friends can be far cheaper. ”

That can be the case in other ways too. For instance, many tour companies sell hop on hop off style tickets to explore a country. You buy one ticket and use it whenever you want to get to your next destination. And they’re really bloody expensive.

Oftentimes you can literally buy a car for less money.

Equally, if you’re willing to sleep in your car then that saves on accommodation costs. Splitting costs between people is a great way to go. Two or three friends could team up and buy a van. That’s a bed on wheels for as long as they need it!

The financial savings stack up quickly.

Top Tip: Advantages of Owning a Car While Travelling

I thought I’d take a moment to talk about the benefits of owning a car on the road too.

Of course, hiring a car is one option. And all the advantages above apply. However, buying the car creates its own additional set of benefits.

The primary advantage is in terms of cost.

Imagine splitting it between people. Two or three friends could team up and buy a van. That’s a bed on wheels for as long as they need it! This immediately cuts accommodation costs.

Oh, and when the trip’s all done, if all goes to plan, they simply sell it on and get their money back. It’s one big financial win.

The same applies for cars. You could buy a car yourself and reap all the same benefits.

Of course, the selling process can be a hassle. And there’s no guarantee you’ll get as much for it as you bought it for. All told, though, buying a car can be more than beneficial from a monetary standpoint when you’re travelling.

There are many advantages of owning a car while travelling. However, there are downsides too…

Top Disadvantages of Cars While Travelling

But it isn’t all good! There are pros AND cons of driving a car when you’re travelling.

Let’s move on to the disadvantages of cars while travelling. Here are the major cons I’ve come across when travelling with cars.

1. Risk of Accidents (One of the General Disadvantages of Driving a Car!)

As we all know, accidents happen.

And, when you’re driving in foreign countries, the likelihood of having one only goes up.

You might be driving on the ‘wrong’ side of the road. The road layouts, junctions, and interchanges can be different. The road signs can be confusing. Other road users can drive differently to how you’re used to. And so on.

In all honestly, there’s no shortage of reasons that driving in other countries can end badly.

The last thing you want is to have a car accident while travelling. And, thankfully, if you drive sensibly, take it slow, and stay focused on the roads, you should be fine! Still, the fact that road accidents are so commonplace among tourists overseas means it’s sensible to take extra precautions.

My top safety tip for travelling in a car?

Get yourself some high-quality travel insurance.

Sure, insurance can’t prevent the bad stuff from happening. But it will relieve the practical and financial implications if it does.

As much as anything else, though, travel insurance gives you peace of mind. Even if you never need it, you know that it’s there- just in case you get unlucky.

There’s a bunch of insurance companies out there, but I recommend using World Nomads. They’re a popular choice among travellers (myself included) and provide all the cover you could ever need.

Check them out below to get an instant quote.

2. The Financial Risk (Disadvantages of Car Travel for Budget Backpackers!)

Driving a car overseas can be expensive too.

It doesn’t have to be, but in worst case scenarios it can end up that way.

“ Take what happened with me and the Danny-mobile. The car lost a grand in value in just 2 months! ”

Now, I don’t think I could have done nearly as much without it for that amount of money. So, I wasn’t too bothered.

And, frankly, given the state it was in when I sold it, I was pleased to get anything!

However, in an ideal world I would have sold it for the same amount as I paid.

Equally, other costs can stack up too when you’re driving overseas. There’s gas money of course, then insurance costs, and potential fines you might get (speeding tickets, parking fines and so on).

Other expenses come into play too. For example, taking your car onto ferries requires you to pay for the privilege. Foot passengers pay a much reduced amount. Likewise, campsites may charge you for parking, and so on.

3. Potential Break Downs

I loved my car in New Zealand.

But it was definitely prone to the odd break down. I broke down twice before the final occasion that really stuffed it!

I got lucky the times before that as well. The battery ran flat first. Thankfully there was someone to help jump leads nearby to kick-start the engine.

Next up, a friend and I were driving (probably slightly too fast) up a steep and winding hill on south island. Suddenly something totally conked out.

“ We ground to a halt and everything just seemed to stop working. Amazingly, 10 minutes later or so we just restarted the engine and it was good to go, as if nothing had happened. ”

Both situations could have ended far worse than they did.

Break downs are frustrating. They’re time consuming and potentially expensive. If you don’t have insurance cover then you’re faced with a dilemma! Moreover, break down somewhere remote, with little traffic, and you could be stranded for some time.

I recommend preparing for the worst! Take jump leads. Have insurance cover (that includes pick-ups). Know how to change a flat tyre. Have spare gas in the car. And so on.

Theft is another potential disadvantage of cars while travelling. It’s always something to be wary of.

4. Potential Theft

I don’t like travelling with valuables.

Now, generally speaking I have a lot of trust in people. And, so far, I’ve been lucky on the road. I’ve never, touch wood, come to any trouble.

However, it’s always a possibility.

“ All it takes is being in the wrong place at the wrong time. After all, bad eggs are everywhere. ”

Obviously, a car is a valuable! It’s likely to be the most valuable thing you’re travelling with. Moreover, all of your other valuables are inside it. Wallets, phones, cameras, passports and computers are all there.

The car may be stolen, in which case everything goes with it. Otherwise, they may break in and steal what’s inside.

Either way it’s an awful situation to deal with. It’s unlikely. With a bit of care, the vast majority of people driving overseas will never have any trouble. But it definitely happens and is always a possibility.

5. It Can be Tiring

As much as I love driving, I’m forever reminded of how tiring it can be.

Long hours behind the wheel can take their toll.

“ Sometimes you can get to the end destination and be too tired to enjoy it properly. Of course, the more tired you get, the more likely you’ll have an accident too. ”

Always take regular breaks on long drives. Share the driving if you can. And don’t continue to drive if you’re too tired! You don’t want to injure yourself. Neither do you want to injure other people on the road.

6. The Temptation to Go Too Quickly

Speed is a key advantage of travelling by car.

You can get from A to B quicker than most other means of transport.

“ But it’s often tempting to go too quickly. There’s always room to slow down. Rush through the journey and risk missing out on all sorts. ”

Incredible surroundings pass unnoticed; special spots get skipped in total unawareness.

The process of travelling is often where the power lies. The actual movement- the time spent on the road- is part of the fun. Driving too quickly makes it harder to feel these rewards.

Another of the disadvantages of car travel is the fact you no longer need to take public transport! Here’s why…

7. You Miss Out On Local Transport

Another disadvantage of driving a car when you’re travelling is the fact you no longer have to take public transport!

That might sound strange. After all, cars trump public transport every time, right? They’re quicker, faster, and offer far more independence.

However, there’s also something cool about hopping on a local bus to a brand new destination, staring out the window, and watching the world go by; the same goes for trains.

Public transport allows you to switch off for a while, or tune into your surroundings in a way that’s impossible when you’re car travelling. You have a chance to meet new people on public transport as well; to strike up conversations and find new travel buddies.

In some countries (especially South East Asia), you also get to experience the craziness of local buses and roads.

Sure, they’re often hot, sweaty, crowded, and uncomfortable- but it’s a new experience nonetheless, and something you miss out on in a car!

8. The Boredom of Car Travelling

And let’s face it, for all the hype, road trips can get a bit boring sometimes!

Don’t get me wrong. I love them.

But being in the car for hours on end- especially on highways, in traffic jams, and when there isn’t much to see- can grow tedious over time.

Of course, the same could be said for travelling long distances on any form of transport. At least buses, coaches, and trains have the benefit of whatever’s going on around you though. As I said above, buses in some countries are crazy, with endless fascinating things to observe.

For example, I remember being on a crowded bus in Cambodia once with someone’s live chicken in a box between my feet. That sort of bizarre, funny, memorable stuff doesn’t happen as often when you’re travelling alone in a car…

9. Environmental Considerations

Environmental considerations could fit into a larger post about the advantages and disadvantages of road transport in general.

However, it’s worth mentioning here too.

Let’s face it, driving isn’t great for the environment. That’s particularly true if you’re in the car by yourself and public transport is an alternative option (that you’ve chosen to skip).

“ Equally, backpacker cars are generally old and a bit beaten up (unless you’re renting from a company). Their emissions are going to be worse than more modern vehicles. ”

Now, this shouldn’t necessarily stop you driving on your travels.

But it’s something to keep in mind. Drive sensibly. Limit your time on the road. Take passengers to reduce the carbon footprint. And so on.

We’ve all got to do our bit to be a little greener. That might be enough of a reason to ditch the car and take the bus instead.

Summing Up the Pros and Cons of Cars When Travelling

There you have it: all of the advantages and disadvantages of travelling by car.

I love to travel and I love to drive. That makes driving on my travels a top combination!

That said, it isn’t without its downsides. For every pro, there’s a disadvantage of travelling by car to match. I’ve experienced most of them! However, I wouldn’t change it for anything.

Overall, whether you choose to drive or not is a personal decision. Hopefully, though, this post will help you make up your mind if it’s right for you.

✅ 5 Advantages Of Travelling By Car

Most of the time, travelling by car makes your life a lot easier.

There are several advantages of car transport including the fact that it gives you more flexibility, freedom, and privacy when you set out on your adventure.

1. You Have More Flexibility And Freedom

When you travel by car, you are on your schedule and have complete control over your trip. You can go at your own pace and stop whenever and wherever you like.

You don’t have to rely on timetables, worry about missing flights or buses, or deal with delays caused by public transport. You also have the freedom to change your route if needed to avoid traffic jams.

2. It’s Easy To Transport Your Luggage Around

Another awesome thing about car travel is that you have no baggage limits or restrictions.

The size of your car is the only limit, but if you’re renting a car for your road trip, you can choose a vehicle that is spacious and roomy.

Furthermore, once you load up, you can keep your luggage there. You don’t have to carry it around or wait to receive it when you arrive at the other end, as with air travel.

Make sure to read our post about packing for road trips before you hit the road.

3. You Can See And Explore More Places

You can see so much more of the country you’re in by traveling by road rather than air.

What’s more, when you take a road trip, you can strategically plan your route to incorporate many scenic spots along the way.

You can also stop off in small villages to get a taste of the local life and experience the country’s culture.

There are always lots of unexpected delights too. On a road trip, you will often come across exciting sights you didn’t know existed.

You will also have spontaneous adventures that you would never have imagined.

4. It Can Be A Fun Bonding Experience

Travel is better with friends, and this is particularly true when you travel by car. The journey is often the best part of a road trip because you bond with your travel companions.

You might be traveling with lifelong buddies or friends you have recently made.

Either way, taking a road trip together is a brilliant way to get to know each other on a deeper level and have some memorable conversations.

5. You Have More Privacy And Comfort

Travelling by car with your friends means you don’t have to sit next to strangers for hours on end.

Depending on how many people are on the trip and how big your car is, you will most likely have more space to stretch out than you would on a plane or coach.

In general, car travel is one of the most comfortable modes of transport.

You will feel more at ease and can sleep without worrying about someone stealing your belongings.

❎ 5 Disadvantages Of Travelling By Car

Since you are in charge of the transport that gets you from one place to another, there’s always a chance that you could end up getting lost or your car could break down.

Travelling by car might give freedom, flexibility, and privacy, but it can also bring some liabilities to the table. Let’s talk about them.

1. It Can Feel Long And Exhausting

Perhaps the biggest drawback of car travel is how tired it can make you feel. Spending hours in the car each day can zap your energy, even if you’re not the one driving. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Take regular stops to stretch your legs and plan short walks at scenic viewpoints to reinvigorate yourself.

What’s more, to prevent boredom, try to make the time in the car as fun as possible. Put on your favorite playlists and sing along, or play games such as ‘I spy.’

If you’re traveling with your partner, read our list of questions for couples on a road trip.

2. You Might Experience Car Problems

Many people avoid traveling by car because of the fear of breaking down in the middle of nowhere. This is an understandable concern if you’re in an unfamiliar country or are driving through long stretches of desert or countryside.

If you’re worried about getting stranded, ensure you have roadside assistance cover and travel insurance in place. Also, keep a stash of water and snacks, and consider packing a roadside emergency kit.

3. You Could Get Lost

Even with Sat Navs and Google Maps, it’s still possible to get lost on your road trip. Again, this can be a scary thought if you are in the area or country for the first time and don’t know your way around.

Reduce the chance of getting lost by taking a Sat Nav or GPS device that doesn’t rely on wifi, and have an old-school paper map with you for backup.

4. Travelling By Car Can Become Costly

If you’re covering a great distance, car travel can become quite costly, and sometimes it can be much cheaper to fly.

This will depend on the gas prices of where you are and how many travel companions you have to split the costs.

These days, the fuel price is quite high and if you’re planning on road-tripping soon – the price of gas could influence the price of your trip.

That said, there are other things to consider when you travel by car. For example, do you need to pay for tolls on the way? And what about parking? Some destinations have expensive tolls (looking at you, Italy).

You could save a bit by booking accommodation with free parking, or by avoiding tolls on the way.

5. There Is The Risk Of Theft

There is always the risk that your belongings will get stolen while you are away from the vehicle.

While theft can happen anywhere, if you’re travelling by car through a dangerous country, the chances are much higher.

Even so, practicing caution will reduce the likelihood of this happening.

Never leave your belongings in plain sight, take valuables with you, park under lights at night, and get travel insurance that covers theft.

Final Thoughts On Advantages And Disadvantages Of Car Transport

As you can see, there are many advantages and disadvantages of travelling by car. If you choose to travel by car on your next trip, prepare well and take precautions to ensure a fun and memorable road trip experience.

The Pros and Cons of Travelling by Car

If you don’t like using public transport and prefer to travel by yourself in your own vehicle, then this article is for you. Today I’m sharing some of the pros and cons of travelling by car that might help you decide whether or not this way of exploring is suitable for you.

Pros of Travelling by Car

Let’s start with the advantages for travelling by car, since it is more fun to find the good in things than to criticize!

Flexibility

Flexibility is one of the biggest pros of travelling by car. You can stop as much as you like, drive at your own pace, and simply enjoy the freedom of a road trip.

No one is dictating where you can and can’t stop and you can choose how much you want to drive in one day before stopping overnight.

Pets

Another benefit of travelling by car is that your beloved pets can join you if you choose this mode of transport. Pets are not usually welcomed on planes or trains, and when they are it is usually pretty stressful for them.

Car rides can be fun for your pets, so nothing is stopping you from taking your pet to have an adventure with you! Just ensure you prepare your car appropriately in order to keep everyone safe.

Packing

Unlike on a plane there’s no baggage limit, you can take almost the entire house with you. Well, not literally, but you can definitely pack everything you think is essential for such a trip.

No worrying while in the queue at the airport to check in if your bag in underweight or not, just simple throw everything you think you may need in the car and off you go.

Better Views

A better view is another of the great advantages of travelling by car. When you travel by plane your view is limited and sometimes covered in cloud. If you choose to see the world from a ship, all you will see is water in every direction.

But if you pick a car as your transport, you will be able to see many beautiful villages, hills, and small towns along your drive. And you will always be able to stop and take some pictures.

Money Saving

Another great benefit of travelling by car is that it can save a bit of money. This works when you are travelling with a bunch of friends who can all chip in for gas. And, if your car is large enough, you can even skip renting a room and just simply sleep in your car.

Driving is considered to be a much cheaper way to travel, because you can control your finances easier and simply be more flexible when it comes to spending your money.

Cons of Travelling by Car

Now let’s get to the biggest disadvantages of travelling by car.

Long Distances

Well, let’s be honest. Driving takes a hell of a long time. You can sometimes drive for hours, and still not reach your destination. You can’t reach every part of the world with a car. You can’t drive through the ocean to travel to Australia, for instance.

In general, if you choose a car as your way to travel, you will have to travel only where you can drive your car, and that means you might not be able to travel everywhere.

If you choose to fly somewhere overseas, you always have the option to rent a car when you arrive, turning this con into a pro. Hertz has great car hire options with comparative prices, keeping your costs down while also allowing you to explore an overseas destination by car.

Bad Weather

Another disadvantage of travelling by car is that bad weather can have a serious impact on your trip. Rain, snow and storms can all change driving conditions and might even ruin your whole road trip if you’re not prepared.

Consider the weather before taking off on the road and be honest about your driving skills, too. Driving under these conditions can be a challenge for some and can be dangerous not just to you, but others on the road if you’re not properly prepared.

Hidden Costs

Finally, the last con of travelling by car is that before any kind of road trip, you definitely need to prepare your car for the long haul, and that might require additional finances and time. Ensure you spend some time checking your car for road worthiness.

Also, consider investing in a few car essentials, especially if you are planning to hit the road long term or with your children. And don’t forget the small but helpful gadgets you can use in a car, like phone or cup holders, a GPS, or sun visors. These all make your road trip that little more enjoyable!

TOP 10 Advantages and Disadvantages of Train Travel

Many times the wrong train took me to the right place.
— Paulo Coelho

Sitting on a train on a sunny morning and reading a book, I came across Paulo Coelho’s quote which read as ‘many times the wrong train took me to the right place‘. I suppressed the binge to check out my ticket, whether I had boarded the right train and started wondering what I would find at my final destination, which might just turn out to be that magic right place. Would it be worth the long ride? Would I enjoy the journey more than the actual fact of getting there? Would I have fun with people travelling with me?

Like many other train passengers, I dived into my book and became totally focused on my reading. Strangely enough, it did not happen for a long time that I caught myself thinking that I was strangely curious to observe what other travel fellows were doing. I realized I wanted to strike a conversation with a perfect stranger about the places our train passed. God blessed me I wasn’t on one of those scenic trains, that take you to mind-blowing places and you can be lost for words to describe the beauty of the landscape outside.

Bernina Express, Switzerland.

Many times the wrong train took me to the right place. ‘ I was contemplating the meaning and wisdom of Mr. Coelho’s words some more time when my eye caught the image of a sweet, little girl staring out the train window. Her black hair was tied back with a green ribbon, her arms wrapped around the train railing next to her seat, her soulful eyes taking in everything around her. The image reminded me of the wondrous feeling I got as a child when my parents took us on vacation by railroad. The European trains offer a great variety of travel options.

Who of us can forget those feelings of anticipation, child-like enthusiasm and excitement as we stepped onto a train; the parents put away our luggage, dad taking out his newspaper, mom keeping busy with some knitting? My siblings and me would stare out of the window, admiring the changing views of the landscape as it swept fast and furiously past us.

«Look mommy!» The young girl suddenly said excitedly. «There is a windmill.» Her mother barely noticed; her fingers fervently typing away on her laptop. «Mmmmmm,» the mother mumbled, not taking her eyes from the screen. The mom looked so unperturbed with the girl’s excitement that it reminded me of my own disappointment with adults that I felt as a child. Why don’t adults take time to enjoy the precious feelings generated by sights, experiences and things around them? Being an adult now, I wonder whether we have lost our passion for life, for the beauty of nature. Why do we think small mundane things are not worthy of our attention?

«Oh wow!» I said aloud. The wisdom and inspiration of the moment hit me straight into the head. That very moment I put down the book I was reading, and focused my attention on everything around me. The sights, the other passengers, and the beauty of the countryside as it was passing by.

I noticed things I had not noticed in years taking the very same train. The feeling was incredible. I realized then that it was that feeling that you have when you are crossing a country, watching outside and seeing all that beauty accelerated, thinking about the past, the future, and of course the present, mostly when you travel alone. That sensation of sucking in the life around you, like a sponge, is more worthwhile than earning a million dollars. It’s as if the mind enters a state of appreciative meditation. As if you are able to grasp wisdom that has not been within your reach before.

I am thankful that from there onwards traveling by train became something I love doing, something I treasure and look forward to.

Traveling by train can be paradise; while in some cases it can become hell. But do not worry, there is a solution for everything, and since there is not really something as the ‘wrong solution,’ we recommend not to get stressed out if your train ride is not going as planned. The wrong train can bring you to the right place after all.

P.S. If you don’t know the place, take out the PeakVisor app, have a look at the landscape around you and if there are mountains present, you will learn where you are in no time!

Advantages of Going by Train

Traveling by train can be convenient

One advantage of going by train is that it can be quite convenient. You just have to sit down and can enjoy the ride.

You don’t have to focus on the traffic. Instead, you can just relax.

You may even take the opportunity to sleep for a while in order to recover and to recharge your batteries for stressful parts of your day.

Therefore, going by train can be considered to be more convenient compared to going by car since you do not have to focus on the traffic at all.

Good for shorter distances

Trains are especially good when it comes to shorter distances.

Up to a few hundred miles, trains are often the best transportation methods since those distances are often too short to make flying a viable option and you can reach your destination within a few hours by train.

Hence, for those short distances, train travel may be one of the best methods to get to your destination.

You can work while traveling

Another upside of train travel is that you can work while you are going by train.

For instance, if you are on a business trip and have to finish an important task in time, you may want to use your time on the train in an efficient manner in order to get as much work done as possible.

This will not be possible if you go by car or plane instead and therefore, going by train is great if you want to use your time on business trips in the most efficient manner.

You can answer phone calls

Through going by train, you can also answer important phone calls.

While this might also be possible if you go by car, it might not be possible in a plane since you will not be allowed to make a phone call during your flight.

Thus, if you have important calls in which you have to take part in, make sure to use a train or a car instead of going by plane.

Train travel is eco-friendlier than using your car

Also for our environment, traveling by train can be considered to be eco-friendlier compared to going by car or by plane.

Train travel implies far lower greenhouse gases and therefore, if you go by train, you can also slow down global warming to a certain extent.

You can socialize

If you go by train on a regular basis, you may also be able to meet many new people and socialize a lot.

While many of those connections may only be quite shallow, you might be able to find some serious business partners over time, which may significantly help you to bring your business to the next level.

Good for people with fear of flying

Some people are also afraid to use an airplane.

If you are one of those people, going by train might be a great alternative for you, especially for shorter distances where you would not save too much time by going by plane.

Can be cheaper compared to going by plane

Depending on your country and on the time you are traveling, going by train can also be much cheaper compared to going by plane.

While some plane tickets can be incredibly cheap, most of them are rather expensive and train travel may provide you with cheaper opportunities to get around.

You can avoid traffic jams

Another benefit of going by train is that you can avoid traffic jams.

If you go by car on a regular basis, chances are that you will get stuck in traffic quite often.

However, through going by train, you will not get stuck in traffic at all since train travel will be quite independent of car traffic.

Therefore, if you hate wasting your time in traffic jams, going by train might be a good alternative for you.

Good for commuting

Especially in countries where public transport connections are quite good, trains may also be a serious alternative to using your car for commuting purposes.

Especially for short distances, you might even be faster when going by train compared to using your car.

Reduction in stress levels

Since you do not have to worry about traffic jams and also do not have to focus on traffic, you may be able to significantly lower your overall stress level by going by train.

You may meditate or sleep a little bit and at the time you reach your destination, chances are that you will be quite relaxed and ready for the challenging tasks that may lie ahead of you.

May help improve our air quality

Since going by train implies less emissions from cars, also our overall air quality tends to improve.

Thus, if you want to make a positive impact on our air quality, you should leave your car in your garage and go by train instead.

Good for your health

Due to the reduction in stress levels and the overall better air quality that is implied by train travel, you may also be able to improve your overall health levels since you may be less likely to suffer from mental as well as from serious physical health issues.

You don’t need to worry about maintenance

Another advantage of train travel is that you don’t have to worry about maintenance issues.

For instance, if you go by car, you will need to attend a garage from time to time where mechanics can fix potential issues.

However, if you go by train instead, you don’t need to worry about any repairs or maintenance and you may have additional leisure time to spend on your hobbies instead.

Trains are relatively safe

Train travel is also considered to be relatively safe.

There are more accidents with cars than with trains and therefore, also your overall life expectancy might increase by going by train instead of using your car.

Some people enjoy traveling by train

For some people, going by train is also a quite enjoyable way to get from A to B.

Some people even make it their hobby to ride as many trains as possible.

Thus, if you are one of those people, you might definitely use trains instead of going by car or plane, at least for shorter distances.

Disadvantages of Train Travel

Trains can be unreliable

Apart from the many advantages of going by train, there are also some issues related to train travel.

One problem with going by train is that trains can be quite unreliable.

Depending on where you live, trains may be delayed or may even not show up at all.

Hence, if you live in a region where trains are quite unreliable, you might want to choose other transportation methods instead.

You may miss important appointments

If your train is late, you may also miss important appointments.

This can include important meetings at work or other important private appointments.

Therefore, when it comes to those important occasions, you may want to use your car instead if you think that this increases the chances to be on time.

May take you significantly longer compared to using a plane

Going by train may also be significantly slower compared to using a plane.

This is especially true when it comes to longer distances.

Therefore, in those cases, you may want to use a plane and not a train in order to save yourself plenty of precious time.

Not suitable for long distances

Especially if you want to travel long distances, trains may not be the right way to go since apart from the time you might be wasting, it can also be quite exhausting to stay on a train for many hours or even days.

Hence, if you plan to travel long distances, do yourself a favor and use a plane instead of a train.

Connections may be quite bad in some areas

Depending on where you live, the overall public transportation infrastructure may also be quite bad.

In such a case, you might have to wait quite a long time until the next train arrives or you may not even be able to get from A to B in a reasonable manner.

Trains can be quite crowded

Especially in the early morning, trains can also be quite crowded and you will not have too much room for yourself.

Therefore, if you suffer from claustrophobia, going by train during those times of the day might not be a good idea at all and you may want to use your car instead.

You may have to stand

During rush hour, trains may even be so crowded that you will not find a seat anymore.

In many cases, you might have to stand during the whole travel period and if you travel for a few hours, this might be quite exhausting and annoying.

May not be practical in rural areas

The connections in rural areas are often quite bad and therefore, relying on trains in those areas might not be a good idea at all.

If you live in one of those remote areas, you may want to use your car instead in order to save yourself plenty of time and nerves.

Trains might be more expensive than using your car

In many cases, going by train might actually be much more expensive than going by car.

This is especially true when you travel with your family since the costs for going by car don’t change if you have additional passengers, but the costs of going by train often multiply.

Thus, especially if you travel with your family, going by car might be a much cheaper alternative.

You will be quite inflexible

If you go by train, you will also be quite inflexible regarding potential detours.

For instance, if you want to make a detour and get some food from the grocery store on your way back from work, you can easily do so with your car.

However, if you go by train, it will be quite complicated to make detours since you might have to change trains and you may have to wait quite long for suitable connections.

Thus, if you are a spontaneous person who likes to change your mind quite often, going by car may give you more flexibility in this regard compared to going by train.

Limited space for your luggage

Depending on the train, you may also experience serious problems when it comes to storing your luggage.

Quite often, luggage storage spaces in trains are quite limited and you may have a rather hard time storing your luggage somewhere near to you.
