A quick guide to Italy

Italy’s capital is one of the world’s most spectacular cities. Situated in the northwest, it’s a glorious mix of cultural delights and architecture dating back to ancient times. As for attractions – there’s the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and the Vatican. The only problem you’ll have is fitting all the wonders in.

Naples

Italy’s third-largest city was founded by the Greeks in the first millennium BC. It’s one of the oldest continuously inhabited urban places in the world. Visit the city center and you can see why UNESCO designated it a World Heritage Site. You’ll also be able to enter the Chiostri di Santa Chiara, a network of fascinating historical cloisters.

Milan

The second biggest city in Italy is situated in the north and is home to the stock exchange. It’s also one of the fashion world’s big four and the Milan Fashion Week is a semi-annual highlight. And from Renaissance art to contemporary showpieces, culture vultures are spoilt for choice.

Florence

Venice

For romance and beauty, few cities can rival Venice. Grab a gelato by the Grand Canal and watch the water taxis drift by in the sun. Alternatively, get some Insta-worthy snaps of the Gothic-style Doge’s Palace. Then walk across the Rialto Bridge, as seen in films including Casino Royale.

Palermo

The capital of the southern island Sicily, Palermo is rightly famous for its history, culture and food. Italian food is renowned, but Palermo’s street food will tantalize your tastebuds. Make sure you sample the fried balls of rice called Arancina, or a pane con le milza (sandwich stuffed with veal).

Trapani

This old fishing port is nestled on the west coast of Sicily and a charming example of Italy at its best. Highlights include the old town with its delightful fish market. And the medieval Erice Village, balanced on a rocky cliff, provides a spectacular view of Sicily.

Catania

At the base of Mount Etna lies Sicily’s second largest city. Catania has survived several earthquakes and is one of the island’s most popular destinations. The late-Baroque architecture has to be seen to be believed, as does the Piazza dell’Universita, which houses not one but two palaces.

Turin

Few cities have backdrops as fantastic as Turin. This northwestern city lies at the foot of the Alps and is famous for the iconic Fiat car and first saleable hard chocolate. However, it’s not stuck in the past – Turin is also known for contemporary art and an envious live music scene.

Awesome architecture, landscapes to die for and gastronomic delights aplenty make this northern Italian city full of sights to soak up. Don’t miss the unfinished Church of Saint Francis, or a chance to travel by bike or horse along the Suburban Ring.

Penalties for the traffic violations in Italy

If there are no limits indicated on the road signs installed at the road sections, then while driving by a car hired in Italy you should follow the standard speed limits.

Speed limits

For passenger cars:

Parking

You should follow the parking rules in the center of the city rather attentively. A lot of city parking zones have time restrictions. Such restrictive measures differ depending on the different days of the week, time of the day or date (even or odd days of calendar). When parking it is necessary to specify the operation mode in the given period of your trip.

Car rental in Italy – compliance with the parking regulations

Parking zones are marked with different colors, which indicate the parking cost.

There are 3 types of parking zones in Italy:

The blue type means that the payment should be performed with the blue discs (they can be purchased at travel agencies, banks, post offices and tobacco shops, and vending machines);

The white type means a free of charge parking area;

The yellow type means a parking area assigned for the owners of delivery cars and people with disabilities.

Admissible blood alcohol level

While driving a car in Italy, the permissible blood alcohol content level comprises 0.5%. In case of exceeding this limit, you will be punished through a strict system of penalties.

If your driving experience is less than 3 years and you are under the age of 21, then the level of blood alcohol content should equal to 0,00%.

You should attentively follow the blood alcohol content restrictions, as they regulate the physical state of a driver rather tightly.

Traffic regulations

The traffic regulations provide for the obligatory usage of dimmed headlights under the conditions of bad weather, outside of the built-up areas, and while passing through any tunnel. The fog headlights can be used only in case of severe snowfall or rain.

The Italian traffic rules strictly regulate the children’s transportation, talks by cell phones, as well as the safety belts usage and compliance with the rules of being in the restricted traffic areas.

Fuel cost

If you need to fill a booked car in Italy, you should remember that there is no leaded petrol at the fuel filling stations. Italian cars can be served with the lead-free petrol (95 and 98 octane) or with the diesel fuel (Gasolio). It is possible to transport no more than 10 liters of fuel in a canister.

While driving along the Italian trunk motorways, you will also meet gas filling stations (LPG) offering their services.

Toll roads

Starting your journey on a hired car in Italy, you should consider the cost of passage through the motorways. The toll value assigned for the usage of Italian roads is retained depending on the covered distance and car category. Passing through several tunnels may also be fee-based.

It is simple enough to calculate the toll value yourself. For this, the number of kilometers should be multiplied by the rate’s unit. Do not forget to add 20% of VAT to the received sum. The result, which is obtained after some simple mathematical operations, has to be rounded up to 0.10 Euros.

Travel rate along the major trunk highways on a rented car in Italy (EUR)

If you lease a car in Italy, you should remember that there are road sections with special tolls (different for each section).

Driving a car hire around Italy

It is obvious that even if we have a rental car and unless we have lots of time, it will be impossible to visit every part of the country. However, there is a list of some of the best places to visit, essential for you to begin to get to know this country and one that you will want to visit again.

Rome, more than just the capital of Italy

The birthplace of western civilization is today a modern and attractive city that retains the legacy of a glorious and extremely rich past. The city of Romulus & Remus awaits us, and thanks to our care hire in Italy, we can visit some unique places such as the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, the Vatican Museums, the Palatine Hill or the Sistine Chapel. These are just a few of the amazing sites that awaits you in Rome.

Naples, a city not to miss in southern Italy

The Neapolitan city at the foot of Mount Vesuvius is one of the best-kept secrets of Naples and easy to get to with your car rental in Italy. Of course, we recommend that you park your rental car for a moment to taste a delicious portion of Neapolitan pizza or a pasta dish made with the exquisite and well-known Neapolitan sauce.

Once we have regained our strength, we turn our attention away from food and take a tour of Naples most popular monuments: the Catacombs of San Genaro, the Cathedral, the Royall Palace, the Castle of San Telmo, Piazza del Plebiscito or the Coral Museum.

Sicily & Sardinia, a paradise so close

The landscapes and beaches of Sicily & Sardinia offer some outstanding views. Do not forget your camera! This would be a big mistake because the views are especially beautiful here and you can really get some great shots for you to share on your social network sites.

The Etna and Stromboli remind us of the volcanic origin of this Sicilian Island. Take advantage of the beautiful surroundings and try some of the rich gastronomy available on the island. Well worth it.

Sardinia on the other hand with its green coast is home to the Grotto of Neptune, the Tomb of the Giants, the Concatedral of San Pantaleon and a vast array of other paradisiac coves.

Milan & Turin, heart of the north of Italy

How different are the possibilities that the north of Italy offers us with places as diverse as Milan; the city of fashion, or Turin where the Shroud of Turin can be found. You can of course take a trip around both thanks to your rental car.

Florence & Venice: the cradle of art

With less than 300 kilometres separating both cities, you cannot leave Italy without visiting two of the mythical cities of the Italian Republic: Florence & Venice. How can you missing seeing the home of Michelangelo’s David or the city of the canals? For both cities, try to take more than one day because there is so much on offer.

Recommendations on Italian roads

The way of driving in Italy is very similar to the character of the Italians. It is important not to let the vibrant nervousness of Italian drivers affect you. Try to respect the traffic and everything will be fine.

With more than 6.500 kilometres of motorways and around 300.000 kilometres of secondary roads, Italy is an ideal place to travel around by car. In addition, it is good to familiarize yourself with the ‘Autopista del Sol’ (the Sun Motorway) known as the ‘A1’, which is a great link between Milan and Naples so you can travel from the north to the south of Italy with your rental car.

It is also important that you are aware of the speed limits around Italy. Within urban areas you cannot go more than 50 km/h; secondary roads the limit is 110 km/h and 110 km/h for main roads. On the motorway, you can travel up to a speed of 130 km/h.

Also, take care with motorbikes. Remember that in Italy, one of the most popular methods of transport is by motorcycle and you will notice this as soon as you arrive. Remember as well that you are on holiday, you don’t need to rush.

Finally, don’t get nervous about the number of tolls, you will need to get used to this. Italy is one of the countries with the highest number of tolls in Europe. It’s well worth it though to be able to have the pleasure of enjoying Italy by car.

Things to note as a driver

The Italian driving mentality

Decisive driving (to put it lightly) is the norm, so Italian drivers will be much more used to this type of road user. Being extremely hesitant behind the wheel will not only confuse local drivers, it may also mean that you never get anywhere. Unlike other countries, drivers here are unlikely to let you out!

Tailgating is fairly common so don’t get anxious if this happens to you. Don’t feel under pressure to speed up – they will pass as soon as the opportunity arises.

The city centre rules

ZTLs (reduced traffic zones) are common in most cities where the aim is to reduce congestion and help preserve the historical centres. Drive within these and your number plate will be caught on camera, then you’ll be sent a large fine via the rental company. Look carefully at any GPS routes, as they may not know to avoid these areas which could result in you driving straight into one.
